Training Tools for Recall Games

Two training mats (or 1 training mat and a blanket)

Hurdle (or 2 shoe boxes and a broomstick)

Key Concepts

Make the Training Fun!

Incorporate recall into fun games or activities in your home or yard that will motivate you to train, and will help your dog maintain enthusiastic responses.

Introducing Hurdles

When practicing hurdles it’s a good idea to keep the bar low (ie. 1-3 inches high). Most dogs will go around the hurdle if you try to put it at 6+ inches before your dog feels confident about the exercise.

Structure and Setup

Use your Mat Work training to create clear expectations in training. Use two mats or two blankets when training a dog to go over hurdles. One will be your starting point, the other will be your end point. Always have your dog move in the same direction – this will help keep your training clean and clear.

Continued Growth

Continue to make training part of your daily routine. The exercises discussed in these classes can help to transform your dog’s challenges into strengths. They’re also one of the best ways to connect with your dog and to provide on-going enrichment.

Take Your Training a Step Further

The next best step in training is to teach your dog a Sendaway. In this class, they will learn how to happily and enthusiastically move to a designated target on cue.
