Capturing Recall
If your dog runs to you without being called, pair this with inviting body language and reinforcement. This is called "capturing", it builds a strong reinforcement history for coming to you.
Controlled vs. Uncontrolled Distractions
Controlled distractions (food, toys) let you adjust difficulty. Uncontrolled distractions (people, dogs, cats) are unpredictable. Build confidence with controlled distractions first.
Body Position
Kneeling makes the exercise easier. Use it in Sets 1 and 2 to build engagement. Generalize to a standing position in Sets 3 and 4.
Reinforcement Rate
Use a high rate of reinforcement (every 1–2 seconds) in Set 1 and when raising criteria in Set 3. A slightly slower rate can be used in Sets 2 and 4.
Training Plan
Take notes and build a hierarchy of distractions from mild to highly challenging.
