Practical Application of Training

Key Concept
Going Back to the Basics
When generalizing to a new distraction or trigger, train with: close proximity to the distraction or trigger, jackpots, predictable training patterns, and repetitions to help your dog anticipate the pattern.
Key Concept
Adding the Cue
Look for anticipation of the training pattern before adding a cue. When you feel your dog is ready, say the cue softly and pair with an effective prompt like stepping toward the platform. Saying the word in a loud or harsh way can cause frustration or confusion.
Key Concept
Training Goals
When using a highly valued food as a controlled distraction, end the set by delivering 1–2 pieces of that special food when your dog is in position on the platform, then give 1 final high-value reward off the platform after "all done." Note: Skip the Down exercise for dogs with back, hip, or joint pain, or if your dog appears nervous or overwhelmed.
