Training Overview
Multi-Dog Household
Multi-Dog Set Ups
1. Training Tools
2. Leash
Lay out a large blanket for the dog “on the sideline.”
Furniture should be difficult to move, and impossible to tip over (like the couch)
3. Blanket
Lay out a large blanket for the dog “on the sideline.”
Push the blanket together so there are folds/ crevices in the blanket (you will toss food in these crevices)
Assume the dog on the side line will want to pull out in your direction, place the blanket in the location where your dog will most likely want to be (see placement in video)
4. Reinforcement Rate
Start this training off by giving the dog on the sideline 1 treat for every 2 – 3 treats that you give to the dog that is on the training mat.
5. Throw the Food to the Blanket
Deliver the food into the crevices of the blanket. Tossing the food onto the blanket will help the dog orient towards the blanket, instead of straining to get closer to you or whoever is training. If your dog barks or cries, pause for 3-4 seconds before delivering food.
6. Boundaries
When the dog receiving center stage training comes off their training mat it will be important to hold the leash (ie. for the break), and prevent them from walking over to the blanket to look for missed pieces of food. They should be learning to give the other dog space.
7. Switch
Do 4 sets of training with one dog, and then switch. The dog that was center stage will now be placed on the sideline, and the other dog will have the opportunity to receive your full and undivided attention in training. Each dog should have their time in the spot light!
