The Takeaway

1

Behavior Modification

Dogs that are receiving behavioral training for hyper-activity, fear, anxiety or aggression will usually benefit from spending more time in a quiet, natural setting. The goal should be to have the dog in a space that encourages them to slow down: sniffing, wading through water, listening to birds, exploring a novel space.

2

Signs that your chosen space supports behavioral goals:

  • Dog is engaging with environment
  • Dog appears calm
  • Dog comes home and seems content / relaxed
  • Dog is able to check-in and take food (even if focus isn’t very strong)

3

Signs that your chosen space could be counter-productive to behavioral goals:

  • Dog exhibits high respiration rate
  • Dog pulls on leash and rarely stops to sniff
  • Dog will not take food
  • Dog’s behavior is erratic (doesn’t know what to do with him/herself)

  • Dog is stress whining

  • Dog seems anxious / hyper-active when you return home
