The Fundamentals

If we are using this training as part of a behavior modification plan, it’s a good idea to do nose work in combination with a strong “station” behavior with a training mat or poly spot.

2 The Release Cue

The cue “find it” can be used to let the dog know that there is something in the environment to be found, whereas the cue “all done” suggests that they can do their own thing, like get a drink of water or smell the roses. I usually use an “all done” cue, followed by a single food reward, once the dog has finished the search. This prevents the dog from remaining in perpetual search mode.

3 Hiding Valued Items

You can choose to teach your dog to search for their favorite food or a favorite toy. Fritz (the black basset mix in the videos) learned to search for and retrieve keys, because he naturally likes to play with all things!

4 Indications

If you want to create another layer to your training you can teach your dog to “indicate” when they have found a scent. Dogs can learn to lie down or rest their head on an object to let the person know that they’ve found the hidden item.

5 Professional Sniffers

Dogs that are trained to search for narcotics, bombs or missing people are usually working for their favorite toy, like a tennis ball. Don’t forget the importance of consistently reinforcing for a job well done.
